The Big Sleep in Vienna Part 4
Part 4: Art and Music
After so many Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical churches and palaces, Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) looked surprisingly simple as it was originally intended to be a part of everyday life. It was such a treat to see the evolution of art on the spot.
And Egon Schiele’s paintings at Leopold Museum are visceral.
Mahagonny Song Spiel & The Seven Deadly Sins by Brecht & Weill at Theater an der Wien. The latter premiered in 1933 and showed a sense of history, yet it was undeniably contemporary; in other words, it was a perfect show to see for our last night. Auf Wiedersehen Vienna!

The Big Sleep in Vienna Part 3
Part 3 : Food, Dogs and Cats
Vienna is Wiener Schnitzel and Figlmüller's is the most famous Wiener Schnitzel restaurant of all. Their Schnitzel is enomorous. There was even a “Schnitzel-man” on the promenade and of course, Mozart look-alikes.
The Zum Schwarzen Kameel (The Black Camel) bar & restaurant has been around since 1618. Its standing wine bar serves delicious canapés. It got very crowded with locals just after 6 and some of them were with their dogs.
In fact, dogs were everywhere: cafés, bars, markets, book stores, and the subway (with mouth guard)…. Here is the sign for a dog run, but it seemed like everywhere was a dog zone.
There was even a fountain of a Renaissance king and his dogs at the Buda castle in Budapest. It beautifully showed harmony between people and dogs.
On the other hand, cats were rarely seen. But, in the yard of Beethoven’s apartment in Heiligenstadt, several street cats were hanging around. At least 2 of them were black!

The Big Sleep in Vienna Part 2
Part2 : Music
Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony Concert at Wiener Konzerthaus on our first night: Paarvo Jarvi’s conducting was intelligent, passionate and crystal clear. It was mesmerising to see that both Jarvi and each orchestra member share the love of the music and amplify it mutually.
Theater an der Wien Tour: Beethoven’s opera “Fidelio” was premiered there. The tour was intimate and thorough. We saw every part of the theater including the very bottom of a huge rotating stage.

The Big Sleep in Vienna Part 1
Part 1: People
It was a promising trip from the very beginning. The cab driver who took us to JFK was Mr. Sherpa from Nepal and his whole family is sherpa. His brother holds the Guinness record of climbing Mt. Everest 6 (?) times.
On the plane to London, we sat next to a Croatian couple in their early 30’s, Draghon and Goga. Draghon is a vet and has been testing for mad cow disease for over 10 years. So far, no mad cow in Croatia! His father is also named Draghon, so when his mother calls one of them, both Draghons answer.
Drinking at the Naschmarkt, the most popular food market in Vienna: We stopped at a traditional beerhouse. Unfortunately, there were no free tables. A senior glee club touring from Germany invited us to join them. They were nice jolly fellows and treated us to 2 beers. Danke!

Birthday Special
Friday was my birthday. We got a bottle of French wine and it was delicious.
I drew Chef and Fireball on it.

Fireball's Big Adventure
After breakfast, Fireball asks to go out to the corridor.
That’s the #1 reason for me to be late for work!

Food is... #2
*3 pirouettes- When Fireball was a kitten, she did these moves after hearing the ‘food preparation’ sound. It was as if her body just reacted to the sound before her brain knew what was going on.
